Safety of Toys - Part 4: Experimental Sets for Chemistry and Related Activities
Also Known As:
Specifications for materials and mixes used in chemistry experiment sets are laid out in the DIN EN 71-4 standard. It comprises compounds identified as dangerous by EC law, substances that, even though they are not designated as dangerous, have the potential to endanger children's health in large doses, and any other chemical substances and mixes given with the set.
This standard is applicable to a variety of experimental sets, including sets for growing crystals, producing carbon dioxide, and adding supplements. As long as they involve dangerous chemical compounds or mixes, it also covers sets for chemical investigations in the domains of geology, biology, physics, microscopy, and environmental science. The standard covers the necessary labeling criteria, contents list, usage directions, eye protection, and experimentation equipment.
It is significant to note that toys covered by EN 71-13, such as cosmetic kits, are exempt from this standard. Additionally, EN 71-5 specifies the criteria for specific additional chemical toys.
The standard makes it clear that the terms "substance" and "preparation" used in earlier directives are also employed in the REACH Regulation, which handles the classification and labeling of chemicals. The word "mixture" will soon take the place of the word "preparation." The word "mixture" is the sole one employed in this standard.
