Standard EN SampleSafety of Toys: Experimental Sets for Chemistry and Related Activities
Also Known As:
A European standard known as BS EN 71-4:2013 outlines standards for the security of chemical experiment sets and activities linked to them, such as crystal growing sets and carbon dioxide generation sets. Based on the EC regulation for hazardous substances and mixtures, the standard establishes the maximum amount and concentration of dangerous substances and mixtures that can be used in these sets.
According to Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008/EC, sets that contain hazardous chemical compounds and mixes are subject to the standard. As long as they use dangerous chemicals, it also covers sets for chemical experiments in other disciplines such as geology, biology, physics, microscopy, and environmental science.
The standard specifies standards for labeling, contents lists, use instructions, eye protection, and experiment-related equipment in addition to the requirements for chemicals and mixes. It does not, however, apply to cosmetic kits or toys that are protected by EN 71-13.
In accordance with the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for categorization and labeling of chemicals, the term "mixture" has taken the place of the phrases "substance" and "preparation" used in earlier directives, according to the standard. The phrase "mixture" is the only one used in the standard.
