Standard EN SampleSafety of Toys: Activity Toys for Domestic Use
Also Known As:
A European standard known as BS EN 71-8:2018 outlines the specifications and testing procedures for activity toys intended for home use. These playthings are designed for youngsters under the age of 14 and frequently have a crossbeam attached to them or incorporate one into them. They are made to support one or several children's weights.
The standard also covers separately sold swing pieces that can be combined with an activity toy, separately sold accessories and components for activity toys, and construction kits that provide the parts needed to assemble activity toys in accordance with building instructions.
Playground equipment meant for public use, such as those covered by the EN 1176 series, is not included in the standard. Additionally, it does not apply to bow-mounted rocking activity toys like rocking horses, which are subject to separate specifications in EN 71 1. It also prohibits trampolines for residential use (covered in EN 71 14), inflatable activity toys (apart from paddling pools), and toy pools with a maximum water depth exceeding 400 mm.
It is crucial to remember that the standard emphasizes the elevated risk of drowning in toy pools with water depths greater than 400 mm and offers advice from the European Commission on the categorization of pools as toys.
