Household and similar electrical appliances. Safety. General requirements
Also Known As:
A European standard known as BS EN 60335-1:2012+A2:2019 specifies the safety criteria for electrical equipment used in homes and other settings. It offers instructions for evaluating, categorizing, and labeling these appliances. Both battery-operated and mains-powered gadgets must adhere to the standard. It includes a broad range of appliances, including those made for commercial usage and those used by knowledgeable or skilled users.
The standard outlines the general specifications and conditions needed to test the electrical safety of household appliances. Numerous topics are covered, including protection against live parts, heating, leakage currents, electric strength at working temperatures, moisture resistance, heat and fire resistance, stability, mechanical risks, internal wiring, and supply connections. By taking into account the reasonably foreseeable threats provided by electrical equipment, it is intended to ensure a high level of user safety.
The standard has recently undergone a number of changes from its previous iteration. These changes clarify testing requirements for three-phase appliances, add requirements for Class II appliances with functional earth, add requirements for spillage testing that include the use of a wetting agent, revise leakage current test requirements for Class II constructions, and add requirements for button cell access. Other revisions include adding rules for appliances used over 2000 meters above sea level, turning component-related notes into normative text, and adding new informative annexes on the effects of UV-C radiation on non-metallic materials and battery-operated appliances.
