The safety criteria for electric kitchen appliances used for domestic and similar applications with a rated voltage not exceeding 250 V are outlined in the BS EN 60335-2-14:2006+A12:2016 standard.

The standard provides a list of examples of appliances that fall within its scope, including bean slicers, berry-juice extractors, blenders, can openers, centrifugal juicers, churns, citrus-fruit squeezers, coffee mills, cream whippers, egg beaters, food mixers, food processors, grain grinders, graters, ice-cream machines, knife sharpeners, knives, mincers, noodle makers, potato peelers, shredders, sieving machines, and slicing machines.

The standard acknowledges that the equipment is designed to be used in shops and other establishments by laypeople for routine housekeeping tasks. Additionally, it acknowledges that in addition to actual homes, household surroundings also contain ancillary structures and gardens.

The standard does not cover the use of specific appliances by children, very young children, young children without supervision, or older children, even though it seeks to address common hazards encountered by all people in households and similar situations. It is acknowledged that extremely vulnerable individuals can have demands above and beyond those covered by the norm.

The standard stresses the possibility of extra criteria for appliances used in automobiles, ships, and aircraft, as well as compliance with national health authorities and labor protection authorities. Additionally, it states that certain items are excluded from its coverage, including food waste disposal units, ice-cream makers with built-in motor compressors, kitchen appliances made for commercial or industrial use, and appliances made for use in environments with unique conditions like corrosive or explosive atmospheres.
