The safety criteria for domestic and similar electrical equipment, specifically electric irons, are covered by the standard BS EN 60335-2-3:2016. Both dry and steam irons that have a separate water reservoir or boiler with a capacity under 5 liters are covered by this standard. These irons' rated voltage shouldn't be higher than 250V.

The scope of this standard also extends to non-domestic appliances, such as those employed by laypeople in retail establishments, small-scale manufacturing facilities, and farms, but which nonetheless pose dangers to the general public. The goal of the standard is to address frequent risks connected to home appliances that are encountered by everyone inside and outside the home.

It should be emphasized that the standard does not take into account several unique use situations, such as children playing with the appliance, very young children and young children using the appliance, and children maintaining the appliance, including cleaning it. The existence of vulnerable people who could have unique requirements beyond the purview of this guideline is also acknowledged.

Additional notes are included in the standard, highlighting the possibility of additional requirements for appliances used in vehicles, ships, or aircraft, as well as any additional specifications made by national health authorities, labor protection authorities, or other similar authorities. It is also stated that ironers, appliances made specifically for industrial usage, and appliances meant for use in environments with unique characteristics, such as corrosive or explosive atmospheres, are not covered by this standard.
