Household and Similar Electrical Appliances - Safety - Part 2-55: Particular Requirements for Electrical Appliances for Use with Aquariums and Garden Ponds
Also Known As:
The IEC Standard 60335-2-55 was adopted as the CSA C22.2 No. 60335-2-55:15 (R2020) standard. It is meant to be used in connection with CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 60335-1-11, which addresses the general safety specifications for home appliances and comparable items. It applies to electric appliances with a rated voltage of up to 250 V that are used with aquariums and garden ponds for domestic and other uses.
The range of appliances covered by the standard includes sludge-suction devices, aquarium heaters, automatic food dispensers, and aerators. Additionally, it covers equipment used in businesses, small industries, farms, and other locations where there may be a risk to the general public. Although the standard addresses frequent risks that people may encounter when in and around the home, it does not particularly address the risk of young children or elderly people using equipment without adult supervision or the possibility of youngsters playing with the appliances.
It is crucial to keep in mind that appliances designed for use in automobiles, ships, or aircraft may be subject to additional restrictions and that various national health agencies, labor protection authorities, and other similar organizations may have additional, specific criteria. Other types of appliances, including pumps, portable immersion heaters, aquarium and garden pond luminaires, appliances with rated power inputs greater than 100 W for outdoor use, only-for-professional-use appliances, and appliances designed for use in environments with unique conditions, such as corrosive or explosive atmospheres, are also exempt from the standard.
