The safety standards for electrical appliances used in aquariums and garden ponds for domestic and similar applications are the topic of the standard IEC 60335-2-55:2021 in particular. The standard is applicable to battery-powered devices as well as devices with a rated voltage of up to 250 V, including both AC and DC-operated devices.

A variety of appliances are covered by the standard, including sludge-suction equipment, aquarium heaters, automatic food dispensers, and aerators. It also includes equipment used in stores, light industries, and farms that isn't meant for daily household use but could nonetheless endanger the public.

The standard does not include the safety of people with diminished physical or mental capacities or children using the appliances, even though it intends to address prevalent risks connected to these machines. It also recognizes that different countries may have unique criteria set by their national health, labor, and other similar authorities. Additional regulations may be required for appliances used in automobiles, ships, or aircraft.

The scope of the standard does not apply to certain types of appliances, including pumps, portable immersion heaters, aquarium and garden pond luminaires, appliances with rated power inputs greater than 100 W intended for outdoor use, appliances only for professional use, and appliances used in hazardous locations.

The standard's fourth version, which includes technical updates, succeeds the third edition from 2002. Alignment with IEC 60335-1:2020, conversion or removal of several comments, updated symbols for immersion depth, and the insertion of restrictions on the temperature rise of externally exposed surfaces are only a few of the changes made.

It is significant to remember that, unless otherwise prohibited, this Part 2 standard should be used in conjunction with the most recent edition of IEC 60335-1 and its revisions.
