Special Requirements for Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) Systems in Health Care Facilities
Also Known As:
The planning, design, building, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of HVAC systems in healthcare facilities (HCFs) are governed by the CSA Z317.2:19 standard. In order to lower the risk of infection transmission among building occupants, including patients, employees, and visitors, this standard is intended to assure the effective deployment of HVAC systems in HCFs.
The standard contains detailed instructions for each section of the facility, including those used for similar or dissimilar purposes, high-activity areas, and treatment and operation rooms for patients who need to be protected from airborne pathogens. As well as best practices for energy conservation, it offers advice for zoning, controls, and monitoring.
In comparison to earlier editions, the fifth edition of CSA Z317.2:19 contains a number of important revisions. These modifications include stricter guidelines for areas in a facility used for multiple purposes, more information on extreme indoor and outdoor conditions, improved electrical system requirements for control systems during power outages, expanded requirements for HVAC system upgrades related to renovations or additions, and new HEPA filter testing and performance verification provisions.
The implementation of more harsh measures when justified by clinical data is not prohibited by this standard, which only defines minimum requirements for HVAC systems in HCFs. The requirement for other building components, such as the building envelope, structure, electrical power and lighting systems, plumbing system, and fire protection system, which can affect HVAC system design and operation, is not covered by the standard, which also applies to new buildings, additions, and alterations.
