Installation Code for Hydronic Heating Systems
Also Known As:
The installation standard for hydronic heating systems is CSA B214:21. This standard's fifth version replaces all earlier iterations. The addition of criteria for using potable water as a hydronic fluid, clarification of recycling requirements for preventing stagnation, and the requirement for pipe insulation in unconditioned spaces are the key revisions from the previous edition.
The standard also specifies the types of pipes that are acceptable, eliminating the use of PVC pipes and fittings and stating that PEX-AL-PEX and PERT-AL-PERT composite pipes are to be considered metal or plastic pipes. Additionally, it adds specifications for the installation of non-metallic piping in return air plenums and flexible pre-insulated plastic piping.
The support of bigger PEX and PERT tube diameters, the support of non-metallic pipe and tubing in support channels, and vertical run support for non-metallic pipe and tubing in support channels are additional changes. The standard also specifies standards for interfaces with building materials, pipe insulation, pipe sleeves, thermal expansion, and thermal contraction.
Pipe fittings, manifolds, radiant floor heating panels, makeup supply connections, air space above insulation, air space below insulation space restrictions, tube fasteners, and heat exchanger and piping materials also have additional requirements.
