The specifications for portable gas camp lights used outdoors with propane, butane, liquefied petroleum gas, or any combination thereof are laid out in the ANSI Z21.73-2017 and CSA 11.1-2017 standards. The standard is applicable to lights made entirely of brand-new, unused components.

The standard permits examination and testing to determine whether lights and components that might not be made of the same materials or have a different construction from those described in the standard are suitably equivalent. The provisions must be followed in order for this recognition to be granted.

Unless otherwise stated, all pressure readings within the standard are taken to be gauge pressures. Except as specified in the instructions section, the first stated value is taken into consideration when a measurement value and an equivalent value in another unit are both provided.

The standard includes rules in Annex A that are specific to Canada. It also makes reference to a number of other standards that are pertinent to this one, along with their sources.

To make it easier to use the standard in metric measurements, the standard also specifies metric equivalents for yard and pound amounts. The first indicated unit is taken into consideration as the requirement when both yard/pound and metric values are provided; the matching value, however, may be approximative.
