The safety standards for rechargeable battery-powered motor-operated products used for domestic and similar uses are outlined in the CAN/CSA-E335-2-18-94 (R1999) standard. These devices must have a maximum rated input of 20 VA, and charging is accomplished by joining the charging assembly to the supply mains.

The manual also addresses devices that aren't meant for common household use but could nevertheless endanger the public, such as those that are employed by laypeople in businesses and farms. The use of a multipurpose appliance covered by this guidance with a particular accessory covered by another IEC standard necessitates that appliance also adhere to that standard.

The manual, however, does not take into account the unique dangers that can occur in nurseries or other locations where small children, the elderly, or people with special needs are present unattended. To maintain safety in these situations, additional measures could be required.

The guide does not apply to appliances made solely for industrial use, shavers, hair clippers, tooth brushes, locations where there are corrosive or explosive atmospheres, appliances operated directly from supply mains, appliances for medical use, or shavers, hair clippers, and tooth brushes (which have separate Part 2 standards). Appliances used in cars, aboard ships or aircraft, or in tropical regions may also need to meet additional standards.

It should be noted that many nations' national health and labor protection authorities may impose extra criteria in addition to those listed in this manual.
