Automatic Electrical Controls for Household and Similar Use - Part 1: General Requirements

SKU913152155 Published by Canadian Standards Association CSA Publication Date1994 Pages CountPages501

A standard called CAN/CSA-E730-1-94 (R1999) pertains to automatic electrical controls used in homes and other related applications. The standard covers controls for heating, air conditioning, and other devices and ensures the safety of such equipment. It is intended to be used alongside Part I of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC).

The standard is focused on the equipment's intrinsic safety, operating values, operating times, and operating sequences. The testing of automatic electrical control systems used in home appliances or other comparable equipment is also covered. Controls for appliances falling under the purview of IEC Publication 335-1: Safety of Household and Similar Electrical Appliances, Part 1: General Requirements are subject to the standard.

The requirements of the standard are applicable to mechanically or electrically driven controls that react to or regulate variables including temperature, pressure, time, humidity, light, electrostatic effects, flow, liquid level, current, voltage, or acceleration. It also includes controls with electronic components. The standard also specifies specifications for starting relays, which are particular varieties of automatic electrical controllers used to switch a motor's starting winding.

The standard also covers manual controls that are integrated physically, electrically, or both with automatic controls. However, IEC Publication 328: Switches for Appliances provides criteria for manual switches that are not part of an automatic control.

The required controls have a rated voltage of no more than 660 V and a rated current of no more than 63 A. The response value of the controls' automated actions, which depend on how they are mounted in the equipment, is not taken into account. The response value is established by the relevant household equipment standard or, if it is important for the user's or the environment's protection, by the manufacturer.

The standard incorporates Canadian deviations, or variations, that are unique to Canadian laws and specifications.
