The general standards for automatic electrical controls used in home appliances and comparable equipment are outlined in CSA E60730-1:15 (R2020), commonly known as Automatic Electrical Controls, Part 1: General Standards. It is the fifth edition, 2013-11, of IEC Standard 60730-1, with Canadian modifications.

A wide range of equipment is covered by the scope of this standard, including relays used as controls for IEC 60335 appliances, appliances covered by IEC 60335, controls for building automation covered by ISO 16484, controls for commercial catering, heating, and air conditioning equipment, and controls for equipment used in public spaces like shops, offices, hospitals, farms, and commercial and industrial applications.

The requirements of the standard also apply to individual controls that are components of a control system or are mechanically connected to multifunctional controls with non-electrical outputs. Unless expressly stated in the applicable Part 2 or equipment standard, it does not apply to automatic electrical controls used only for industrial process applications.

The operating values, operating times, and operating sequences related to equipment safety are the main topics of CSA E60730-1:15. It includes controls that can be activated by a variety of factors, including temperature, pressure, time, humidity, light, electrostatic effects, flow, liquid level, current, voltage, acceleration, or a combination of these. The standard also covers manual controls that are integrated physically, electrically, or both with automatic controls.

According to the standard, automatic electrical controllers must have a rated voltage of no more than 600 V DC or 690 V AC. It permits the use of electronic devices and NTC or PTC thermistors, which are further described in Annex H and Annex J, respectively, in controls.
