Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-27: Particular requirements for appliances for skin exposure to optical radiation
Also Known As:
A safety standard called IEC 60335-2-27:2019 focuses primarily on devices made to expose skin to optical radiation. This standard covers domestic and equivalent electrical appliances with rated voltages of no more than 480 V for other appliances and 250 V for single-phase appliances. It includes devices using DC power as well as those powered by the mains or batteries.
This standard's goal is to address the frequent risks connected to equipment used in tanning salons, beauty salons, and other comparable settings to expose skin to optical radiation. It does not, however, take into account situations in which children might play with the appliance or the usage of these products by people with physical or mental impairments that would make it unsafe for them to use the appliance.
It is important to note that this standard does not apply to equipment used to care for the skin or hair, sauna heating equipment, cosmetic and beauty care equipment using lasers and intense light sources, medical equipment, equipment that uses UV radiation for purposes other than tanning the skin, or equipment used in environments with unique conditions like corrosive or explosive atmospheres.
The IEC 60335-1-compliant technical updates and the addition of testing criteria were both added to the sixth edition of this standard, which was released in 2019. It supersedes the fifth edition that was released in 2009 and any later updates. In addition to the most recent revision of IEC 60335-1 and its revisions, this standard should be used.
