The safety standards for high-pressure cleaners and steam cleaners used in residential, commercial, and industrial settings are covered by AS/NZS 60335.2.79:2002. The requirement applies to high-pressure cleaners with a pressure range of 2.5 MPa to 25 MPa and a high-pressure pump input drive no greater than 10 kW. Single-phase appliances should not have rated voltages greater than 250 V, while other appliances should not have ratings greater than 480 V.

Commercial and industrial steam cleaners are likewise covered by the standard, even if the pressure is less than 2.5 MPa. Appliances that use alternative energy sources are also taken into account, as long as their impact is taken into account.

While the standard seeks to address typical risks connected with appliances used in and around the home, it does not account for some situations, such as small children using equipment unattended or playing with it.

For appliances used in automobiles, ships, or aircraft, as well as requirements set forth by national health authorities, labor protection authorities, water supply authorities, and similar agencies, the standard includes remarks indicating that extra requirements may be required.

The standard does not apply to certain types of appliances, including those used for audio/video, medical purposes, hand-held motor-operated electric tools, personal computers, transportable motor-operated electric tools, and steam cleaners intended only for home use. It also does not apply to appliances designed for use in special environments like corrosive or explosive atmospheres.
