The safety criteria for electric portable appliances used for cooking in homes are specifically covered by AS/NZS 60335.2.9:2002. These include toasters, grills, and other comparable portable cooking machines. The standard is applicable to equipment with a maximum rated voltage of 250 V.
The range of equipment covered by the standard includes, among other things, waffle irons, contact grills, roasters, cookers, food dehydrators, hotplates, portable ovens, raclette grills, radiant grills, roasters, rotary grills, and indoor barbecues. The standard intends to address typical risks connected to these equipment that might be experienced by anyone inside and outside of the home.
The guideline, however, does not take into account the use of this equipment by small children or elderly people who are not being watched, as well as children playing with the appliances. It also accepts that any additional restrictions imposed by national health authorities, labor protection authorities, or equivalent authorities in various nations may be necessary for equipment designed for use in automobiles, ships, or aircraft.
This standard does not apply to stationary ovens and grills, warming trays, frying pans, deep-fat fryers, microwave ovens, outdoor barbecues, equipment used for commercial catering, or equipment used in environments with unique requirements like corrosive or explosive atmospheres.
