The specifications for timers and time switches used in residential and similar applications are laid out in the BS EN IEC 60730-2-7:2020 standard. Various energy sources, including electricity, gas, oil, solid fuel, and solar thermal energy, can be used by these devices. They are frequently employed in heating, cooling, and related systems.

Individual timers employed as a component of a control system or those incorporated into multifunctional controls with non-electrical outputs are also covered by the standard. Time-delay switches (TDS), which are covered by a different standard, are not included. 

The standard covers the inherently safe design, functional requirements, and testing of timers used in home appliances and other comparable items. It is also applied to industrial uses, including process heating, central heating, and air conditioning, that do not have specific product specifications. Timer devices used in machinery meant for public use outside of homes, such as those in stores, light industries, and farms, are also covered by this standard.

The third edition of the standard, which was released in 2020, coincides with the fourth edition of IEC 60730-1:2010 and improves the compliance criteria, requirements for filament lamp loads, allowances for anomalous operation, and other country-specific requirements. Timers and time switches are the main areas of attention for this standard.
