Household and Similar Electrical Appliances - Safety - Part 2-28: Particular Requirements for Sewing Machines
Also Known As: CAN/CSA C22.2 NO. 60335-2-28:16
Electric sewing machines used in homes and other similar settings must comply with the safety criteria of CSA C22.2 No. 60335-2-28:16 (R2021). The standard replaces the criteria for sewing machines established in another standard, CSA C22.2 No. 68-09, which deals with motor-operated appliances. It adapts and changes IEC Standard 60335-2-28.
For single-phase appliances, the standard covers electric sewing machines with rated voltages up to 250 V, and for other appliances, up to 480 V. Electrical setups and overlocking machines are also included. The standard's scope includes sewing machines marketed to laypeople for use in retail and light industry that could endanger the public.
The standard seeks to increase sewing machine safety and address common risks related to home appliances. However, it fails to consider the particular requirements of people with physical, sensory, or mental impairments, as well as those who lack the expertise and knowledge necessary to use the appliance safely without supervision or guidance. Additionally, the standard excludes appliances made for industrial use and those used in environments with unique requirements, such as corrosive or explosive atmospheres.
The use of appliances in automobiles, ships, or airplanes, as well as in accordance with national labor and health protection authorities, may necessitate additional regulations. The standard has been issued as such by CSA Group in accordance with the Standards Council of Canada's standards for National Standards of Canada.
