Household and Similar Electrical Appliances - Safety - Part 2-29: Particular Requirements for Battery Chargers

SKU177733254 Published by International Electrotechnical Commission IEC Publication Date2019-03-29 Pages CountPages106

The safety standards for household and similar electric battery chargers are the main emphasis of the IEC 60335-2-29:2016+A1:2019 standard. It applies to battery chargers having a rated voltage of no more than 250 volts and an output no greater than 120 volts of direct current. Battery chargers for home use as well as those for use in garages, shops, light industry, farms, and other places where public safety may be an issue are covered by the standard.

The standard covers frequent risks connected with electric battery chargers with the intention of ensuring the security of everyone within and outside the home. However, it does not expressly take into account those with physical, sensory, or mental disabilities or young children who might not have the skills or knowledge needed to operate the charger securely.

The standard has a number of exclusions, such as built-in battery chargers (aside from those made for caravans), chargers integrated into appliances with inaccessible batteries, chargers made for industrial use, and chargers made for use in corrosive or explosive environments. Additionally, battery chargers for electronic devices or emergency illumination are not covered.

The standard was modified for its fifth edition, which also includes criteria for supply cords used in low temperatures and standards for battery chargers with output voltages higher than SELV (Separated Extra Low Voltage). Among other minor adjustments, it adds a classification for battery chargers used outside.

Within 12 to 36 months of the standard's release date, it is advised that national implementation take place. It is unnecessary to order the amendment separately because the fifth edition (2014) and its amendment 1 (2019) are combined in this version. IEC 60335-1:2010 should be read in addition to the standard.

Batteries and battery chargers are key words.
