The safety standards for electrical appliances used to heat liquids in homes and other settings are the topic of the standard IEC 60335-2-15:2012. Appliances with a rated voltage of up to 250 V that are designed for use in residential, commercial, and light industrial environments must comply with the standard. It is significant to remember that this standard does not apply to equipment used in commercial food preparation.

This standard's goal is to ensure the safe use of these appliances by addressing common risks connected with their use. The standard, however, does not take into consideration those people, especially kids, who might have restricted physical, sensory, or mental capacities or who lack the expertise and knowledge needed to operate the device safely without supervision or guidance.

The fifth edition of the standard, released in 2002, and all of its updates are superseded by this sixth edition. The key modifications in this edition are the addition of unique specifications for dynamic pressure cookers and soy milk makers, as well as enlarged specifications for cordless kettles. Additionally, the standard rearranges the section on instructions for various appliance types and turns some notes into normative text.

The standard suggests a transitional period for equipment producers and testing businesses to modify their goods in order to comply with the new specifications and prepare for any new or changed tests. The content of this publication should be adopted by National Committees no earlier than 12 months and no later than 36 months after the date of publication. It is also suggested that you study this document in combination with IEC 60335-1:2010, which lists the general specifications for home appliances and other related electrical devices.
