The safety requirements for high-pressure cleaners without traction drives are covered by the BS EN 60335-2-79:2012 standard. These cleaners have rated pressures ranging from 2.5 MPa to 35 MPa and are made for indoor and outdoor use in both commercial and residential settings. The requirement that their capacity not exceed 100 l, rated pressure not exceed 2.5 MPa, and product of capacity and rated pressure not exceed 5 MPa x l also applies to steam cleaners and specific components of hot water high-pressure cleaners with a steam stage. There is no traction drive on these devices.

The standard covers a variety of power sources for the high-pressure pump's drive. These include internal combustion engines, battery-powered motors, hydraulic or pneumatic motors, and mains-powered motors (single-phase machines up to 250 V and other machines up to 480 V).

The 2002 second edition of the standard and all updates made since then have been superseded by this third edition. It is a technical revision with a number of changes and updates, including the revision of the scope, terms, and definitions to prevent misunderstandings, general revision, updating, and addition of new annexes covering acoustical noise emission, vibration emission, and the addition of a model test report for vibration emission.

IEC 60335-1:2010, which specifies general standards for home appliances and other similar electrical appliances, should be read in combination with this standard.
