Safety of Household and Similar Electrical Appliances - Part 2: Particular Requirements for General-Purpose Cleaning Appliances
Also Known As:
The safety of household and similar electrical equipment, particularly all-purpose cleaning appliances, is the emphasis of the CAN/CSA-E335-2-54-94 standard. The standard is applicable to cleaning devices that are operated while being held in the hand, including those used to clean windows, walls, ceilings, and empty swimming pools. To clean, these appliances may use brushes and cleaning solutions that may or may not contain chemical additives. Appliances that apply pressure and heat to cleaning agents may also be covered by the standard.
However, the scope of this standard has several restrictions. It makes no mention of the special risks that might be present in nurseries or other places with unattended small children, old people, or people with disabilities. Additional requirements might be required in these circumstances. The standard also does not apply to cleaning devices that are permanently fixed to buildings, operate at pressures or liquid temperatures greater than 2.5 MPa (25 bar), or are designed for commercial or industrial use.
The standard also acknowledges the possibility of extra requirements unique to these conditions for appliances intended for use in vehicles, ships, airplanes, or tropical countries. It also highlights the possibility of extra requirements depending on the country for national health agencies and labor protection authorities.
